Polyethylene is a thermoplastic which is widely used in various products. Its name is based on ethylene in monomer state; ethylene is used to make polyethylene. It is known as PE in plastics industry. Etylene molecule consists of two CH2 molecules. Polyethylene is produced by polymerization of ethylene. Polymerization can be made by radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, ionic polymerization or cationic polymerization methods. Each of these methods results in a different type of polyethylene.
Classification of Polyethylene
Polyethylene is classified based on its density and chemical specifications. Its mechanical characteristics are based on its molecule weight, crystal structure and branching type.
HDPE high density PE
LDPE low density PE
Although their characteristics depend on their types; their main characteristics include resistance to external conditions and moisture, flexibility, weak mechanical strength and superior chemical resistance. They are mostly used in cups, plastic boxes, kitchen equipment, coatings, pipes and tubes, insulating layers on cables, packaging films, and they are relatively cheap.
